August Birthstone

August's birthstone is the soft-toned gemstone, peridot. Peridots have long been sought after and represent strength and balance. We dive into the history of this stone, its hidden meanings, and give you our top choice for August birthstone gifts.

The History of August's Birthstone: Peridot

Peridot is a variety of the mineral olivine and has been used for centuries in jewellery and decor. In mediaeval times peridot jewellery was worn by priests, as well as the stone being used in churches within Europe. In fact, you can see the stone in the Shrine of the Three Holy Kings in Cologne Cathedral.

August's birthstone were first found on a volcanic island in the Red Sea called Topazios. It was discovered by the Ancient Egyptians who called peridots the "gem of the sun." Today peridots are found in the state of Arizona, with approximately 80-95% of the supply being from here.

The Meaning of August's Birthstone

Every birthstone holds its own meaning. August's birthstone's name comes from the Arabic word 'faridat' which means 'gem.' HIstorically, peridots were believed to be a shield to the owner, keeping away evil spirits. In this sense it is very similar to the evil eye meaning held by talisman jewellery. It was also said to keep away terrors of the night.

Today, peridots are thought to bring strength and balance to the wearer. Those adorned with August's birthstone can hope for the gem to encourage peace and harmony, as well as inspire creativity.

How to Care for Peridot Jewellery

Peridot is fairly tough, scoring 6.5 - 7 on the Mohs scale of hardness (diamonds are a 10). This means that August's birthstone is strong enough to wear as jewellery but should be properly taken care of to avoid any scratches.

  • Soft cloth - To start cleaning your August birthstone piece, gently wipe away any loose dirt with a soft cloth.
  • Mild soap & lukewarm water - To clean away remaining dirt, use your soft cloth paired with a mild soap and warm water (not hot) and clean off any remaining debris.
  • Rinse - The last step in cleaning your jewellery is to rinse off any soap suds, and gently wipe dry with a soft dry cloth.
  • Avoid submerging - Avoid submerging your peridot piece into water as this can loosen the glue and the stone.
  • Keep safe in a jewellery box - Keep your piece safe when you're not wearing it in a personalised jewellery box, away from dirt and dust.
