What Is A Daith Piercing?

A daith piercing is a specific type of cartilage piercing. They are located in the inner curved fold just above the ear canal opening.

Daith piercings have their origins in Jewish culture and the name translates to 'knowledge' or 'knowing' in English. Daith piercings are sometimes thought to be linked to the alleviation of migraines. This could be because the daith may be an acupressure point, however there is little scientific evidence to prove that they do help. Regardless of their pain relief qualities, daith piercings look utterly stunning. They can look effortlessly elegant when styled on their own, or can be a beautiful addition to a curated ear.

How Long Does a Daith Piercing Take to Heal?

Daith piercings usually take between 6 and 9 months to fully heal. This is longer than lobe piercings because the hard cartilage requires more time to recover. Although the healing process is a little longer, we think it is well worth the wait.

As with other cartilage piercings, it may look as though your daith has healed before it is. This is because the skin recovers first, and then healing continues inwards. It can be normal for a daith piercing to secrete a little fluid during the healing process, so don't worry if this happens to you.

All types of ear piercings are technically wounds. Therefore, you need to properly care for them to help them heal without complications.

How Painful Is Daith Piercing?

Daith piercings can be considered moderately painful due to the thickness of the cartilage. That being said, they are not the most painful piercing you can get. If you have a conch piercing already, you can expect a daith piercing to cause slightly less discomfort than that. If you have lobe piercings, the process of getting your daith pierced will likely be slightly more uncomfortable. Overall, the pain varies from person to person depending on tolerance levels.

Another thing to consider is that daith piercings can take a little longer to complete than other piercings. Due to the position within the ear, the procedure usually takes between 6 to 9 seconds. The extended piercing time can prolong the time you feel the initial pain for. After the piercing is complete, you may feel a dull achy pain which tends to dissipate in a fairly short time. With proper care, you should be able to enjoy your healed daith without any pain at all.

How to Prepare for Your New Daith Piercing

Before attending any piercing appointment, there are a few ways you should prepare. We recommend:

  • Avoiding alcohol and blood thinners: consuming alcohol and substances such as ibuprofen or aspirin can thin your blood. This may increase how much your piercing bleeds.
  • Eating and hydrating: eat a light meal and drink plenty of water before your appointment. This can help you avoid feelings of nausea or dizziness following your piercing.
  • Consider your hairstyle: keeping your hair away from your piercing when it is new can help prevent complications and irritation. Tie your hair back in advance or bring a hair band to your appointment so you can keep your hair out of the way.

Although we don't currently offer daith piercing at our studio, we do have a selection of gorgeous earrings which can be worn in your daith once it has healed.

Types of Earrings For Your New Daith Piercing

There are two main types of earrings which are popularly worn in a daith piercing - huggies and bar earrings. Although these are the two main types of earring, there is plenty of variation even within these styles which means you can create a unique look you love.

  • Diamond earrings can be an enchanting choice for the daith. This timeless gemstone exudes class and sophistication. Perfect for any occasion, it adds a signature sparkle to your appearance. Try our diamond marquise bar earring for an understated look, or our riva diamond huggies for a more statement look.
  • Solid gold hoops such as our infinity mini hoops are a gorgeous way to elevate an everyday outfit. They add a touch of subtle glamour that makes you look and feel fantastic.
  • Sterling silver jewellery elegantly enhances cool tones. Worn in the daith piercing, a silver earring can be a beautiful finishing touch to any outfit.
  • Gemstone earrings can add a vibrant pop of colour to your daith. Take our mini gem huggie earrings for example. The coloured stones are eye-catching as they glint in the light. Use this style of earring to add vibrancy to an everyday look or to complement the colours in an evening ensemble.

Let your daith shine on its own, or complement it with a whole ear party of splendid earrings. However you wish to style your daith piercing, you'll find limitless combinations with our collections.

Caring For Your New Daith Piercing

To help your daith heal without complications, it is essential to keep up with your piercing aftercare. Below are some key dos and don'ts to remember.

Aftercare Dos:

Do clean your piercing with an Antibacterial Cleansing Saline Solution. This is the only cleanser you need. The salty solution will help to remove any discharge, and help to keep your daith piercing clean. You should clean your piercing twice a day whilst it heals.

Do keep your original piercing jewellery in for the full duration of the healing time. Once healed, you can swap this earring out but make sure not to leave the piercing empty in the first 12 months.

Do remember that daith piercing aftercare doesn't stop once your ear has healed. To keep your daith in the best condition and free from infection it is important to clean your earrings. Dermatologists recommend doing this once a week to jewellery you wear regularly.

Do handle your earrings with clean hands when putting them in and store them in a clean jewellery box to keep them safe. Any dirt or oil carried on your hands or left on your earrings can increase the chance of infection.

Aftercare Dont's:

Don't use soap, beauty products, or creams (e.g. Savlon, surgical spirits or TCP) to disinfect the piercing. These products can slow the healing process and are deemed too abrasive.

Don't swim in the sea or in chlorine water for 4 weeks after your piercing.

Don't sleep on your new piercing. Sleeping on your daith piercing can cause discomfort and irritation. On top of this, the pressure to the ear can also alter the angle of the piercing when it is healed.
