A Word With

JENNY WALTON

Meet Jenny Walton, an illustrator, Fashion Director at The Sartorialist and street style star. Take a peek into her world and discover her love for old Hollywood glamour, Picasso, subway rides and her latest collaboration with Monica Vinader.

Your career will be the envy of many a young fashion lover. How did you get to where you are?

I'm very intrigued by style and I love to create. I've followed those two instincts, and so far they haven't led me astray.

What is the best piece of advice you have been given along the way?

My favourite pieces of advice have always come from people I haven't known personally. Picasso has said a few of my favourites.

"I paint objects as I think them, not as I see them."

"I am always doing that which I cannot do, in order that I may learn how to do it."

When did your love of fashion begin?

I loved watching old Hollywood movies when I was young. I always felt like I was dreaming that I was somewhere else or wanted to be somewhere else. I was so happy when I moved to New York because I finally felt closer to that dream. Once I was in high school, I started making more of my own clothes and it felt good to be unique in that way. So I decided to go to school for Fashion Design so that I could be closer to all of that.

How do you think your style has evolved over the years?

I think my style has always been a little bit inspired by the past in its way, but as I get older I like to play with interesting colour combinations and challenge myself more. The most important thing is to stick with what works well with your body and what makes you feel good. I like my back and my neck, I like my jawline so I like to show those off when I can.

What is the first illustration you remember creating?

I remember the first serious illustrations I had to do were for my acceptance to FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology), and I was very nervous. At the time I thought they were the best illustrations that had ever been created! I look back and laugh at the idea of myself thinking they were so good. I've come a long way since then in terms of drawing.

There is so much personality in your illustrations. How much of your own persona goes into your work?

A lot of myself goes into the drawings, especially the movement. I listen to music always while I draw, I let the music kind of guide my pen.

What would you say is your favourite thing to inject into your artwork?

I like to create the idea of something without actually having to draw it. One of my favourite quotes is from Leonardo Da Vinci who said, "Simplicity is the ultimate form of sophistication." That simplicity is something I strive for.

Where would you say is the most inspirational place for you to sit and sketch?

The subway in New York, the movement is calming.

You are working with Monica Vinader on a project this Fall, what are you most looking forward to with this collaboration?

I'm most looking forward to people seeing the beautiful illustrations and the fun ways we have made them come to life with videos and gifs. I also love the concept behind the project, of the different places you could wear such a beautiful bangle. It's simple but very chic, so you can easily wear it shopping with friends, stacked for an evening, or on a day trip to the beach.
