It's that time of year. Summer is slowly starting to fill the air, and there's something special about Summer in New York City. After opening our brand new store (our second in the Big Apple!) on the prestigious Madison Avenue, we sit down with Monica to chat about her favourite spots in the Upper East Side and why the city holds a special place in her heart.
Why do you love New York so much, is there a special connection?
My parents lived in New York when they first got married so they took Gaby, my sister, and I to all of their favourite places when we were children. It holds some very magical nostalgia for me.
What's your favourite memory?
Having Christmas at the Carlyle with my family when I was 18 years old. It's such a special hotel with a rather glamorous following - welcoming some serious VIP guests including JFK and, supposedly, Marilyn Monroe! It's also home to my favourite bar in the city, Bemelmans. Again, its long-been a bit of a celeb hangout and, in my opinion, is a New York landmark. Handily it's just a stone's throw from our new boutique!
Wonderful! Are there any other restaurants you'd recommend?
BG at Bergdof Goodman is a great spot for lunch. It's on the seventh floor so you get a great view of Central Park. For dinner I love the iconic 21 Club - it's got a great atmosphere so it's a fun place to be in the evening.
We know you're a big fan of art and sculpture, what would say are the must-see museums?
There are so many great museums in New York. In the Upper East Side specifically, I love the Met and the Guggenheim. They're very different spaces, the Met is obviously much older. But they're both incredibly inspiring in their own ways!
And, most importantly, what about shopping?
I love the Gagosian shop on Madison Avenue, they have amazing art books - conveniently they're across the street from our new boutique! Gabriela Hearst has also opened a new store near to ours - it's absolutely beautiful. A must-visit if you're in the city!
Last but not least, where do you go for some pampering?
Mzia Shiman does the best oxygen facials! I live in Norfolk, a rural part of England, so these are a lifesaver when I come to the city. I also swear by Jin Soon for nails - always such a nice treat.
